Repair or start again?
The visible defect is not always the real cause. Use the condition of the base, drainage and surrounding area to decide what deserves closer investigation.
When the problem is localised
- A small number of sunken or damaged blocks
- Local edge failure with an otherwise stable base
- Minor tarmac damage away from widespread movement
- Individual stained or damaged paving units
- Drainage detail that can be corrected without rebuilding the whole area
When the failure is structural or widespread
- Repeated settlement or rutting across the driveway
- Standing water caused by poor overall levels
- Cracking that reflects movement beneath the surface
- Weak or contaminated base material
- A major layout, drainage or access redesign is needed
Compare whole-life value, not only today’s repair bill
A cheap patch can be good value when the cause is isolated and understood. Repeated patching becomes poor value when the formation, sub-base, drainage or overall levels are the underlying problem. Ask an installer to identify the likely cause, the repair area, what will be reused and what guarantee applies to the repaired section.
