How these guide figures are calculated
Each example multiplies the configured material guide rate by the stated area and applies the current ±15% estimate range. It does not include excavation, removal, drainage, restricted access, steps, walls, covers, waste, dropped kerbs or unusual ground conditions.
The full estimator adds project answers and configured preparation items. A contractor’s final quotation may use a different specification, supplier, labour rate, disposal cost and margin.
What affects driveway prices?
A reliable estimate has to account for more than the visible surface. These are the main cost drivers used by the estimator and considered by installers.
Total square metre area
Material, labour and disposal quantities usually rise with the measured area.
Excavation depth
Weak ground or a deeper construction build-up increases excavation, aggregate and labour.
Existing surface removal
Concrete, tarmac and block paving have different breaking, lifting and disposal costs.
Ground condition
Soft spots, clay, tree roots, movement or poor historic preparation can require extra work.
Drainage requirements
Channels, gullies, falls, permeable systems and soakaways can materially change the scope.
Machinery access
Restricted access may require smaller machinery, more manual handling and longer installation time.
Material choice
Gravel, tarmac, block paving, resin and patterned concrete have different material and labour profiles.
Edging and borders
Kerbs, contrasting borders and restraints add materials, cutting and installation time.
Steps and retaining walls
Level changes may require structural work beyond the driveway surface itself.
Manhole adjustments
Covers may need raising, lowering or replacing with recessed units.
Waste disposal
Spoil, old surfacing and contaminated material must be transported and disposed of correctly.
Regional labour costs
Labour, haulage, disposal and supplier pricing vary across the UK.
Dropped kerb requirements
A new or widened vehicle crossing is normally a separate council-controlled project.
